In total, the attackers tried to steal $ 23.5 million, but they managed to save $ 10 million.
Israeli financial platform Bancor reported that unknown hackers stole $ 13.5 million worth of cryptocurrency: $ 12.5 million worth of ether and $ 1 million worth of Pundi X tokens.
Hackers compromised the wallet that was used to update smart contracts. They also tried to withdraw $ 10 million worth of Bancor (BNT) tokens, but the company managed to freeze their withdrawal using emergency security protocols. The administration cannot do the same with other cryptocurrencies that are used on the site.
Bancor users’ wallets were not affected, the company stressed.
Bancor has partnered with other cryptocurrency exchanges to track stolen funds and prevent thieves from withdrawing or reselling tokens, the company said in a statement. During the investigation of the incident, the work of the site was suspended; Bancor did not specify the timing of the resumption of work.
The Bancor platform allows users to trade cryptocurrency using smart contracts. In 2017, the company managed to raise $ 153 million in an ICO. Over the past day, the BNT rate has decreased by 15.5%, to $ 2.43 per token.
